What is Hymen Reconstruction Surgery?
Hymen Reconstruction Surgery is a short day care operation that repairs the thin ring of tissue at the entrance of the vagina. The surgeon brings the remaining edges together with fine absorbable stitches, so the area heals as one layer again. Because the tissue lies very superficially, the operation stays shallow and does not enter the deeper vagina. Most women arrive in the morning and go home a few hours later. A wider overview of the subject sits on our hymenoplasty page, whereas this page focuses on the repair itself and on how your privacy is protected.
Does the hymen prove anything about a woman's past?
No, it proves nothing at all, and this is a settled point in medicine rather than an opinion. Hymenal tissue varies naturally from one woman to another in thickness, shape and opening, and a few women are born with almost none. Sport, cycling, gymnastics, tampon use and ordinary injury can all change how it looks. Meanwhile, many women bleed at first intercourse and many do not, so bleeding is not a reliable sign of anything either. Therefore we do not perform virginity testing, and we do not issue certificates or reports of that kind. We simply treat the tissue as tissue, because that is all it is.
Why do women choose this operation?
Reasons differ from woman to woman, and every one of them is treated as valid without questioning. Some women come after an accident, a fall or a sporting injury that tore the tissue. Others come after an assault and wish to close a chapter in their own way. Many have personal or cultural reasons that they prefer not to explain, and no explanation is ever demanded here. Above all, the decision belongs to you alone. The situations below are the ones we see most often.
- Healing after an injury caused by sport, a fall or a road accident.
- Recovery after an assault, often with counselling running alongside.
- Personal or cultural reasons that the woman chooses to keep to herself.
- Repair of tissue damaged during an earlier gynaecological examination or procedure.
- A wish to feel more settled before marriage, decided freely and without pressure.
Will my consultation stay confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is the foundation of how this service is run, not an added extra. Consultations take place in a private room, and you may attend alone if you wish. Records are kept restricted, and nothing is shared with parents, a partner, a relative or any third party without your written consent. Reminder calls and messages go only to the number you choose, and you may ask us not to call at all. Because the procedure is day care, there is no hospital admission and no overnight stay to explain to anyone. Our full privacy and confidentiality policy sets out exactly how your information is handled.
Who is a suitable candidate?
A suitable candidate is an adult woman in reasonable general health who is making this choice freely for herself. Active infection, a current urinary or vaginal problem and pregnancy are all reasons to postpone rather than proceed. Timing is usually planned for the week after a period, since healing is easier when bleeding is not expected. However, if you feel pressured by anyone to have this done, please say so, because your safety matters more than any appointment. Nobody is ever booked for surgery in a single rushed visit.
What are the options available?
Two broad approaches exist, and the right one depends on how much tissue remains and how long the repair needs to last. A simple repair joins the existing edges and suits women whose remnants are still reasonably intact. By contrast, a fuller reconstruction uses a small flap of nearby vaginal lining when very little tissue is left. Sometimes a lighter, short term repair is chosen because a woman has a particular date in mind. The table below sets out the differences in plain terms.
| Approach | What it involves | Usually suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Simple repair | Existing edges are freshened and stitched together | Remnants that are still reasonably intact |
| Full reconstruction | A small flap of vaginal lining rebuilds the ring | Very little remaining tissue |
| Short term repair | A lighter closure planned around a specific date | Women who want a limited, temporary result |
How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is normally carried out under local anaesthesia with light sedation, and it takes about thirty to forty five minutes. You are numbed thoroughly first, therefore the operation itself is not painful. Fine absorbable stitches are used, so nothing needs to be removed at a later visit. Nothing is left inside the vagina and no catheter is required. Afterwards you rest for a short while, and most women walk out unaided on the same day.
What is recovery like?
Recovery is usually quick and quiet, with mild soreness for a few days and light spotting for up to a week. Ordinary work and study can normally resume within two to three days. Intercourse, tampons, swimming and cycling are avoided for about six weeks, because the repair needs time to become firm. Meanwhile, loose cotton clothing, simple pain relief and careful hygiene are all that most women need. A single review is arranged, and it can be kept brief if you prefer.
What results should I expect?
Expect a healed, restored ring of tissue, yet no honest surgeon will promise how your body will behave later. Bleeding at intercourse is unpredictable in every woman, with or without surgery, therefore it cannot be guaranteed and should never be treated as a goal. Some repairs stay firm for years, while others soften with time, exercise or a further injury. Scarring is generally minimal, because the stitches are small and absorbable. In short, the realistic aim of Hymen Reconstruction Surgery is a sound anatomical repair rather than a promise about the future.
What are the risks?
Risks are low but real, and they are explained fully before you agree to anything. Bleeding, infection, a stitch reaction and delayed healing are the usual concerns. Occasionally the opening heals tighter than intended and causes discomfort, which can be adjusted with a small procedure. Rarely, the repair separates early and needs to be revised. Because problems are far easier to settle when reported quickly, you are given a direct number to call.
What does it cost in India?
Cost in India depends on the technique used, the type of anaesthesia and the theatre time required. Fees are quoted in rupees and cover the surgeon, the anaesthetist, theatre charges and the follow up visit. We do not publish a figure, because any number given before an examination would be misleading. Instead, you receive a clear written estimate after examination, and it is handed to you privately. Payment records are treated with the same discretion as your medical notes.
What are the common myths?
The biggest myth is that intact tissue shows a woman has never had sex, which is simply untrue. Another is that every woman bleeds the first time, when in fact a great many do not. Some believe this is major surgery with a long hospital stay, yet it is a day care procedure. People also assume the clinic will inform a family member, and that never happens without your written permission. Finally, many think the repair must be arranged in a hurry, whereas taking time to decide is always encouraged.
